Although advancements in technology have allowed meteorologists to forecast the weather weeks in advance, it’s still important to be proactive when preparing for duty during the winter season.<\/p>\n
Due to the nature of security, an officer\u2019s duties can change with minimal notice. On any given day, a security officer\u2019s assignment could vary from patrolling property with little to no shelter, transporting terminated employees out of state, or assisting with hazardous situations in rural areas.<\/p>\n
Below are some of the more common preventive measures security officers can take to stay safe during changing cold conditions:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Dress in layers
\n\u2022 Wear a hat and gloves
\n\u2022 Stay hydrated<\/p>\n
In addition to making sure you personally are prepared for winter weather conditions, you should also consider your equipment. With winter weather comes hazardous driving conditions, collisions and vehicle break downs. Make sure you have plenty of fuel in your vehicle and your phone is charged.<\/p>\n
The following items can be beneficial when traveling or administering aid during winter weather conditions:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Jump starter and\/or jumper cables
\n\u2022 Thermos (warm liquids)
\n\u2022 Portable cell phone charger
\n\u2022 Flares and\/or signaling equipment
\n\u2022 Blanket
\n\u2022 Change of clothes
\n\u2022 Water
\n\u2022 First aid kit
\n\u2022 Sandbag (tire traction)
\n\u2022 Fix a flat<\/p>\n
Items to keep on your person or in a small travel bag:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Flashlight
\n\u2022 Blanket
\n\u2022 Cell phone power pack\/charger
\n\u2022 Liquids
\n\u2022 Nonperishable food\/snacks\/energy bar<\/p>\n
