Home Safety for the Holidays

The holidays should be a time to slow down, enjoy family, and recharge a little. It’s also a season when people let their guard down, travel more than usual and bring new visitors into their homes. A few simple steps can make a real difference in keeping your home secure while you enjoy the break.

Be Smart About Travel: If you are heading out of town, make the house look lived in. Use timers for interior lights, leave a vehicle in the driveway if you can and ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out. Avoid posting travel plans on social media. Announcing that you are gone is an easy gift to anyone looking for an empty house.

Secure Packages and Deliveries: This is prime season for package theft. If possible, have deliveries held at a pickup location or sent to your workplace. Porch cameras help, but the best approach is keeping packages out of sight in the first place.

Check Your Home Technology: This is a good time to make sure your cameras, alarm system and smart devices are working the way they should. Verify that cameras have clear views and clean lenses, confirm alarm notifications are going to the right phone and update any passwords you haven’t touched in a while. A few minutes of housekeeping goes a long way.

Be Fire Safe: Holiday decorations create more fire hazards than people realize. Inspect lights for damaged wiring, unplug decorations when you leave the house and keep trees away from heat sources. If you use a real tree, keep it watered so it doesn’t turn into a dry matchstick.

Don’t Forget Outside Security: Keep walkways and entry points well lit. If you have motion lights, make sure the sensors are aimed correctly. Lock gates and sheds and secure ladders so they can’t be used to reach upper windows.

Watch Who Comes and Goes: Between holiday parties, family gatherings and deliveries, there are more people around your home than usual. Keep doors locked, even when you are home. If you use smart locks or access codes, consider creating temporary codes for visitors and removing them after the holidays.

Keep an Eye on Your Vehicles: People often leave gifts and shopping bags in cars this time of year. Try not to leave anything visible. If you must store items in the car, lock the doors and park in well-lit areas or inside the garage.

The holiday season brings joy, celebration, and a welcome break from routine, but it also calls for a little extra awareness. By taking these simple precautions, you can protect your home, your property, and the people you care about. A few smart habits now can help you avoid unnecessary stress later, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: time spent with family, friends, and the traditions that make this season special. Stay safe, stay mindful, and enjoy a peaceful and secure holiday.
