Additional strengthening remains possible as the system develops, including a low-end chance of subtropical development. The combination of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and coastal impacts could create travel and localized flooding concerns through the weekend.
Dangerous Flash Flood Threat Builds Across New Mexico
Extreme monsoonal moisture is expected to bring rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms across New Mexico from Tuesday through Thursday. Rainfall rates could reach 2–3 inches per hour in some areas, creating the potential for dangerous flash flooding with little warning. Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly where storms repeatedly affect the same locations, making flooding the primary weather concern across the state this week.
Dujuan Brings Widespread Flooding to Eastern Japan
Dujuan is moving away from Japan after bringing heavy rainfall and flooding to eastern portions of the country. More than two million people were evacuated as the storm affected the region. Although the immediate threat is beginning to decrease, lingering impacts could continue for days or weeks. Recovery efforts may also be prolonged as communities address flooding and other storm-related damage.
UN General Assembly Brings Heightened Security and Demonstrations to New York City
New York City is preparing for heightened security and demonstration activity during the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expected September 24 appearance has prompted calls for demonstrations in Midtown Manhattan, including a planned march from Bryant Park to the United Nations. Additional demonstrations surrounding other international leaders and political issues are also expected throughout the week. Increased security measures, large gatherings, and protest activity could contribute to localized traffic and transportation disruptions in Manhattan.
